Cumbria Guide

Cumbria is foremost a rural area and home to the famous Lake District National Park which, is the largest national park in England and covers 885 square miles (2,292 sq km). This area is deemed to be one of the most beautiful areas of the United Kingdom. It is no wonder that this area has long been a magnet for artistic types attracting generations of artists, writers and musicians, there could not be a more fantastic place to be creative.

Located in the north wrest of England, the area is predominantly mountainous and the highest point here is Scafell Pike a mere 3,000ft (900 metres) high. All of the mountains that exceed 3.,000ft (900 metres) above sea level are in Cumbria.

History in the area can be dated back 5,000 years when the early stone age settlers came to the area for stone for their axes and to build stone circles many of which still remain today. Later settlers have also left behind remnants of their past with Hadrians Wall, their forts and Viking crosses, towers and Cathedrals and Monasteries which, are used today as parish churches. It was an important centre for mining although this activity has now ceased there are excursions to the disused sites.

There are approximately 400 towns and villages in Cumbria so there are ample places to explore.

The obvious attraction to Cumbria is the Lake District but it doesn't stop there, Cumbria has so much more to offer to its visitors. With such a spectacular backdrop and fantastic scenery it is easy to relax and enjoy all that is on offer. There are a large number of historic houses and gardens that are open to the public, where you discover antique furniture and an insight into the grand interiors of these fabulous houses, the gardens contain a delightful mix of plants and exotic flowers and prime examples of walled gardens. For children there is plenty to keep them entertained from the World of Beatrix Potter, specialist centres for birds of prey and fish, steam railways and museums. For the older and perhaps more adventurous of us there are hot air balloon rides or the opportunity to go wild at Whinlatter Go Ape Centre.

Culturally there are municipal art galleries in the larger towns but, throughout the area are various private galleries showcasing local artists and workmanship. There are a number of theatres where local and main stream productions are shown. Alternatively, visit one of the cinemas showing the latest in art house and niche productions.

Obviously being such an outdoor area you can expect to find a host of sporting activities for your enjoyment. Some of the activities on offer are horse riding, mountain trekking, flying, gliding, paragliding, karting, quad bikes, off roading, cycling, climbing, abseiling, diving, birdwatching, canoeing and watersports and this list is not exhaustive. With so much to do there will not be an opportunity to be bored, in fact a further holiday may be required to get over this break.

With such a rural setting it will come as no surprise to find fantastic food and drink available. The eating establishments are proud to use and promote locally sourced products, including clear Lakeland water in the local beer, and celebrated Lakeland beef and lamb. To accompaniment the fantastic food available there are award winning restaurants to gastro pubs, local inns to cafes waiting to serve you whether it is a quick snack or a formal meal. You will certainly be impressed with what is on offer.

Throughout the year Cumbria is host to a number of events and festivals from traditional agricultural shows to music festivals, incorporating jazz and blues, maritime festivals, air shows to the more bizarre scarecrow festival and local fetes. Regardless of the time of year when you visit there will be something occurring to excite and inspire you.

With such spectacular surroundings it should not be difficult to choose accommodation. With so much on offer you are spoilt for choice, will you stay in one of the towns or villages or even in a more isolated area away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Wherever you stay you are ensured a warm welcome.

Bearing in mind the abundance of things to see and do it may be advisable to sit down and plan your visit to make the most of your time here in Cumbria. With the area being so easy to access be it by car, rail, coach, plane or ferry there is no reason to prolong your visit to this fabulous area, you will leave with a plethora of memories.
