Anglesey Guide

If you are looking for a place to get away from it all then Anglesey is your port of call. Here you can escape from the everyday hustle and bustle, relax and enjoy your surroundings and local hospitality. It is suited to all ages and walks of life. Anglesey is known by its locals as “Mon Mam Cymru” or translated the Mother of Wales.

Anglesey is located in North Wales but is separated from the mainland by the Menai Strait. It is easily accessible from mainland UK by two road links, the A5/A55 or the smaller Four Mile Bridge B road. There is a main railway line linking to Chester and London. There is the ferry port of Holyhead which operates passenger ferries to Dun Laoghaire and Dublin in Ireland.

The area is steeped in history and throughout you will find numerous sites of historical, archaeological, religious and artistic interest. In fact there is evidence of human habitation going back as far as the Mesolithic period around 7000BC. The next arrival of people to Anglesey were in the Celts in around 500BC and there is an abundance of evidence of their time here. The inhabitants just kept coming to set up home in this beautiful country.

With such an expansive coastline that stretches 125 miles and has been declared an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, there is an abundance to things to see and do. It is difficult to know where to start your journey. The coastline consists of sea cliffs, sheltered coves, estuaries, lagoons and dunes and sandy beaches that are family friendly. St Cybi's Church, Holyhead is generally seen as a good starting point on this path and it will connect you with many villages and towns. Inland there is also amazing landscapes and scenery to enjoy with lakes, wetlands, heaths and mountain ranges, the highest peak in the county being 220m (722ft).

With such a changeable landscape it has great appeal to outdoor enthusiasts as there is such a diverse range of activities on offer. You can participate in everything from surfing, diving, jet skiing, horse riding, walking trails, hiking, fishing, golf and boating, this list is no way exhaustive. If you can think of it it is more than likely available here.

The mild climate and unspoilt environment make it an ideal place for the wildlife, flowers and fauna that are prevalent here. It is a natural attraction for nature lovers and bird watchers who can enjoy the beauty of puffins, guillemots, razorbills, terns and commrants in their natural habitat. The sea is host to a wealth of fish and marine life, seal colonies can be found along the rocky coastline, if you are particularly observant you might be rewarded with the sight of dolphins.

Anglesey may be host to the town with the longest name “Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwlllllantysiliogogogoch” or as it is more commonly known “Llanfairpwll” but, that is not all this village is famous for, it is also the place where the Women’s Institute Movement was established in Britain in 1915.

When it comes to sights to see and things to do, there is so much to choose from, with everyone from young to old catered for, and from ancient to modern, indoor and outdoor activities. With petting farms, zoos, sea zoos, butterfly palace, go carting, beaches to explore, and an abundance of outdoor activities available, the younger visitors are well catered for.

The many burial sites found throughout the county are an interesting way to spend a few days, here you will get a real insight into the past. At Beaumaris you can get a glimpse into the history of the area, at the Courthouse you get a feel of a real life courthouse and can imagine how the prisoners felt while waiting to be sentenced. Then move over to the Gaol an original Victorian Gaol built in 1892, see the spartan cells, punishment rooms and handle chains and fetters donned by the prisoners. Afterwards you can visit the unfinished Beaumaris Castle commissioned by Edward I around 1926 who ran out of money and therefore never completed it. There is so much more to see in this town and the other villages and towns hold their own attractions and charms.

Culturally there is lots to see and do from Maritime Museums, the Amlwch Copper Kingdom which was were copper was discovered and made this area one of the foremost mining sites of the time, Folk museums where the history of the local people and area is portrayed through exhibits and local craft skills. Then there are mills to explore, roundhouses where you can get a glimpse into prehistoric life in these houses with thatched roofs and timber frames covered with wattle and daub. There are numerous galleries to explore and theatres where you can enjoy local and mainstream productions.

The people of Anglesey are a friendly and welcoming and are happy to share their culture and history with you.
